Circa 1880

From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Aspreys Oak Letter Telegram Box. The Aspreys Letter Box is made from solid oak with a central letter box flanked by two small shelves for storing books or documents. The Letter Box is fitted with a rectangular brass face which contains the word “letters” on with a small letter hole which sits above a second brass plaque fitted with post leaves. The front of the Aspreys Letter Box has a glazed panel fitted with bevel edged glass below a circular brass escutcheon and above a pull out telegram tray with thumb holes for removal and a pen tray to the front labelled with a brass plaque “telegrams”. To the inside a small brass plaque sits to the rear of the box reading “Asprey 166, New Bond St London W.” and the user can access the post leaves to change as and when required. The Letter Box is finished with a Bramah lock keeping the contents safe from prying hands. These Letter Boxes would have been used in a large country house or hotel period to the piece and date to the late 19th century during the Victorian era circa 1880.

The Aspreys Oak Letter Telegram Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Victorian, an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.

Oak has many global variations. European Oak, also known as English or French Oak, is found in Europe. It is a well known and very popular wood due to its different types and strength yielding many uses. It can have a very simple clean look or a highly figured finish varying from tree to tree. European Oak can be Golden-yellow to light-brown in colour. Brown Oak is from the United Kingdom and its name is derived from its red-brown colour which is resulted from an attack by “beef-steak” fungus. This usually gives the wood an even colour, however, sometimes the wood can be streaked with a light brown giving it the name Tiger Oak.

Bramah is London’s oldest security company. Established at 124 Piccadilly, London in 1784, and today based in Fitzrovia, London and Romford, Essex. Bramah manufactures Bramah and Rola locks for domestic and commercial applications in the U.K. and overseas. We are Marylebone and Fitzrovia’s foremost Locksmith and Burglar Alarm installer.
