Description
Fabulous Betjemanns & Son Decanter box veneered in superb striking figured Coromandel, with exquisite stunning engraved gilded brass, including robust carrying handles, hinges and escutcheons. The decanter box is also embellished with tigers eye agates on the front, rear and top. The top having an ornately framed monogram.
Lifting the lid of this magnificently made antique Decanter box reveals a purple velvet lined interior which carefully houses a round bronze gilded engraved serving tray behind three superb lead crystal cut glass decanters with faceted stoppers.
Opening the two doors at the front reveals twelve small cut glass spirit glasses housed in gilded brass holders, rarely seen with the very same cut glass to match the decanters.
The bronze gilded serving tray and spirit glasses with the exception of one glass are all marked with the crest of a lion clutching a flower.
Comes with a fully working lock & original tasselled key.
This would make a rather impressive showpiece and talking point for any dining room, office or even the boardroom.
George Betjemann started as an apprentice cabinet maker from a young age working for his Father in Law.
In 1848, his two sons George William Betjemann and John Betjemann joined him under apprenticeships until 1846 when George William Betjemann started his own business with his two sons. In 1859 George moved to new premises on Pentonville Road, London. This was when the business became known as ‘Betjemann & Sons’.
John Betjemann was the grandfather of the later famous poet laureate Sir John Betjemann.
