Description
Betjemann & Son Writing Box veneered in exotic Coromandel and Satinwood with ornate silver plated mounts.
The interior contains a navy Blue Gold tooled original velvet writing surface, pen tray and two brass gilded glass inkwells. Behind these are two fabulous leather bound books and to the back is a brass gilded push button engraved “Betjemanns” Patent, when pressed, a secret extendable compartment extends at the back which springs out to reveal a solid Satinwood interior with more compartments for stationery.
According to “The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths” by John Culme, George Betjemann started business in 1851 and soon became known as the largest maker of fancy goods in the world. He was the inventor of the Spirit Tantalus Stand, of which he sold many thousands, and patented self-closing book slides & extending dressing cases. In 1858 George’s two sons joined the firm, when its name became George Betjemann & Sons.
A truly fantastic Betjemanns Writing Slope by the one of the best makers of their time, comes with a fully working lock & tasselled key.
