With Stand Alone Mirror & Silver Gilt Fittings by Thomas Johnson
From our Vanity Box collection, we are delighted to offer this fabulous Leuchars Burr Walnut Silver Gilt Vanity Box. The box of rectangular shape veneered in beautiful Burr Walnut with quadrant brass edging, inlaid to the top centre of the box with an initial monogram with two circular brass barrel escutcheons and flush fitting campaign style side handles. The box is opened via a cleaver rotation lock which activates upon twisting the escutcheons in a clockwise motion of approximately 45 degrees. Once activated the spring-loaded lock opens each compartment.
Opening the lid reveals the extensive fitted top tray featuring Silver Gilt metal work with solid gold monogrammed roundels to the center of each lid, exquisite hobnail cut glass jars and accoutrements including scissors, a mother-of-pearl pen knife and a solid gold thimble. The centre of the top tray removes to reveal the wonderful gold thimble and further sectioned storage compartments. The top tray also removes completely for further storage below. The bottom drawer features sectioned compartments for jewellery and further accessories such as watches. The inside of the lid houses a removable stand-alone mirror lined with Royal Blue ruched Velvet, when removed the Mirror will stand on its own with an adjustable bracket and reveals the secret document storage behind.
The Box is fitted with Bramah locks and is fully signed to the rear beneath the mirror W. Leuchars, Manufacturer, 38. Piccadilly, London to the rear of the case on a brass plaque and to the lock plates also Leuchars. The silver-gilt lids are all hallmarked Thomas Johnson London 1871 along with the Leuchars mark.
Burr Walnut is a highly prized wood which is formed by a growth deformation resulting from stress, disease or nurturing the tree in a specific way. Burr can be developed by blocking the sap flow of the tree by means of putting a French Walnut on top of the roots of an American Walnut. Due to the unusual properties, it is rare to come across a Walnut tree growing this way in the wild. Nurturing planted trees takes at least 80 years before it is mature enough to be cut for good purpose. Burr Walnut is highly desired for their unusual grain and pattern, used mostly in veneering larger pieces such as furniture would be joined by matching the veneer pieces or blending them together.
