From our Jewellery Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Coromandel Jewellery Box. The Jewellery box of rectangular shape with domed top beautifully veneered in exotic Coromandel wood with Brass quadrant edging and double stringing across the front, lid and rear. The box features two matching escutcheons to the front with two access keys. To the centre of the lid, a circular cartouche is inlaid with an initial plaque featuring a shaped shield like motif and the letters ‘CA’. When opened the Jewellery Box reveals a black water Silk lining with cushioned steel grey Velvet. Silvered fittings with detailed engravings are located on the rear side and front with the signed Bramah lock. The left hand side houses the push button for the hidden side access compartment which is sprung loaded and activated on the press of the button matching the lower drawer which activates using the same method of the rear centre button. The side drawer is marked with the makers mark Parkins & Gotto, Oxford St. London. The lower drawer when opened by the spring-loaded catch features a quad compartment for further storage of Jewellery or Watches. The box dates to the Victorian era circa 1875.
Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.
Parkins & Gotto William Parkins and Henry Jenkin Gotto established Parkins & Gotto in London circa 1845 and were originally stationers supplying paper and printing services. As the company grew it expanded into neighbouring premises on Oxford Street and started supplying various items including boxes ranging from tea caddies to writing cases. They experienced success by offering a wide range of objects and prices meaning there was something to suit all budgets. The company ceased trading towards the start of the 20th century.
