Hallmarked Silver 1886

From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this Coromandel Silver Mounted Cigar Box. The Cigar Box of rectangular shape beautifully veneered in exotic Coromandel wood with fine applied silver corner mounts. Each of the silver mounts are beautifully cast with various scrollwork and hallmarked sterling by London silversmith Jane Brownett (widow of Abraham Brownett) and dated 1886. The exterior of the box is finished with a vacant silver initial plaque to the lid and a very unusual hidden catch built within the escutcheon. The Box can be opened by pulling the barrel escutcheon from the right hand side which hinges open and unlatches the box, a rare hidden feature. The interior of the Cigar Box is lined in cedar wood for keeping cigars fresh and signed to the lock plate Batson, London.

Sterling Silver refers to the alloy of metal containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc. Sterling Silver objects are stamped with the 925 mark to confirm their authenticity.

Cedar, also known as Lebanon Cedar, True Cedar can be found in Asia, Europe and North Africa. Cedar trees are long lived and often offer a poor quality, knotty wood. Logs used for veneer are carefully chosen to make sure they have a clean, straight grain. African Cedar, or Bosse, found in West Africa is a pink-brown colour when fresh, turning into a dark almost mahogany colour with age. Brazilian Cedar found in South America is a medium brown colour.
Western Red Cedar is found in North America. A more durable cedar with a colour ranging from pink-brown to dark red.

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.
