Description
Presented here is a Charming Military Mess Table Lighter, shaped in the form of a Dragon, by London Silversmiths, Walker & Hall.
The main body of this strikingly remarkable lighter is formed of a Blackbuck Antelope Horn, with a superb cast of a Chrome-plated Dragon, breathing fire; with the wick stationed in the Dragon’s mouth, for the flame, and the Dragon’s foot positioned on a flaming grenade.
On the Dragon’s left Wing, there is a stamp which reads: “WH”.
The Dragon of Wantley is a Legend. This Legend is of a Dragon-slaying Knight in Wharncliffe Crags, South Yorkshire, England; it is a story that was told in Mr Thomas Percy’s 1767 book ‘Reliques of Ancient English Poetry.’
George Walker established his business in sheffield, 1845. As an Assistant to Dr. John Wright, who had conducted important experiments on electroplating methods, Walker secured the royalty of electroplating for Sheffield. In 1853 the business was joined by Henry Hall and became ‘Walker & Hall’.
The following instructions are provided to help you operate the table lighter:
Inflame the wick that hangs from the mouth by using a lighter or a match. In the event the wick is dry, lighter fuel should be used, which can be purchased from any tobacconist. In order to burn the wick, some fuel needs to be dripped on it. This can also be applied to its interior by removing the head, but you should remove the damper from the mouth, first. (This is also what you must do if the wick runs out in the future). Once you have unscrewed the head, you will see the remainder of the wick, which can be filled with fuel by unscrewing the head carefully. There is currently fuel in the lighter, and the wick has recently been replaced, so it should last for a long time; you may have to pull the wick out a little 2-3 mm from the mouth if it gets too short; if it gets pulled too far out, the flame will become too big. It is possible that the wick may burn out at some point; if you would prefer us to take care of this for you we would be more than happy; we would also ensure the piece has had a full clean and service for you.
With every purchase from Mark Goodger Antiques, you will receive our latest catalogue, a Certificate of Authenticity, detailed care instructions for your chosen piece and an independent invoice (for insurance purposes) will be enclosed. As well as being protected by a no-hassle, money-back policy, your piece will be entirely insured during the shipping process to ensure the safety of your item.
