The lid with a beautiful inlaid decoration having mother of pearl and brass work below a central dragon figure. The front of the box fitted with a bell shaped escutcheon. When opened the interior reveals its original red lining and brass fixings with a large lock plate. The Jewellery Box dates to the first half of the 19th century Louis Philippe I (1830-1848) circa 1845.
The box comes complete with a fully working lock and key.
Rosewood has many variations. Indian Rosewood, Madagascan Rosewood, Mexican Rosewood, Rio Rosewood, Brazilian Rosewood, San Dominican and Santos Rosewood. All types are prized for their grain and colour. Generally, the colours range from a medium-dark red-reddish brown.
Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer.
Louis Philippe I (1773-1850) was also known as the Citizen King. His reign as King lasted 18 years from 1830 to 1848. He was the penultimate monarch of France and his successor was Louis Napoleon Bonaparte when the position of King was abolished. As Louis Philippe, Duke of Chartres, he distinguished himself commanding troops during the Revolutionary Wars and was promoted to lieutenant general by the age of nineteen, but he broke with the Republic over its decision to execute King Louis XVI. He fled to Switzerland in 1793 after being connected with a plot to restore France’s monarchy. His father Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (Philippe Égalité), fell under suspicion and was executed during the Reign of Terror.
