Description
Henry Clay Papier Machedecorated with painted anthemion border & classical Etruscan style figures.
The scene depicted is an imitation of that found on the Attic Hydria, which is attributed to the Meidias painter. The scene shows Herakles performing his final labour of receiving the golden apples from the garden at the end of the earth, which are guarded by the Hesperides (nymphs of the evening).
Has a beautiful gold swing handle to the lid and a decorative escutcheon typical of Henry Clay pieces.
The interior of the Henry Clay tea caddy features a papier mache floating lid with brass handle and traces of its original lining. It also comes with its original key and working lock.
Hinge has had an old repair and is in good working order and most probably done over 100 years ago.
