The five boxes inside are finely painted with more nautical and landscape scenes, each with wonderful detail. Four contain card decks and the long central box is full of various mother of pearl gaming counters.
St Michael’s Mount is a small tidal island in Mount’s Bay, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The island is a civil parish and is linked to the town of Marazion by a man-made causeway of granite setts, passable between mid-tide and low water.
The base of the box is signed “Jennens & Bettridges”
Aaron Jennens and T.H. Bettridge acquired Henry Clays workshops in 1816 and continued the manufacture papier mache items until 1864. They were based in Birmingham, but opened branches in London and eventually Paris and New York.
By the 1850s Jennens & Bettridge were known as the foremost papier mache producers and were appointed manufacturers to King George IV, William IV and Prince Albert.
