Description
Kingwood Writing box by Edwards.
The exterior of this writing box is veneered in kingwood with superbly detail inlaid foliate brass. It also features engraved brass edging for added strength and two campaign flush carry handles.
Inside is a gold tooled, green leather writing surface which can be locked. The bottom half can be opened, by sliding back the two locking tabs, to reveal storage space and on the back of the surface features cross stringing for holding cards and letters.
Lifting the top half of the writing surface reveals further storage space with a secret compartment. The secret compartment can be accessed by lifting out the pen tray and pressing the lower right hand side of the pen trays compartment. This will cause the secret panel to pop open to reveal three drawers.
This writing box also has its original sterling silver traveling inkwell all hallmarked London 1830.
The detailed work on this writing box such as, the inlaid brass, inset decorative handles, the timbers used of the highest quality and its mechanism for the secret compartment is work we recognise and believe to be from Edwards workshop.
Edwards were purchased by Asprey in 1859 and had two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria, they were known makers of some of the best boxes to be sold.
