Unusual Double Opening Doors

From our Apothecary collection, we are delighted to offer this Mahogany Double Opening Apothecary Box. The Apothecary Box of rectangular form made from solid Mahogany sat upon a plinth base with a flush mounted brass top handle and flush mounted escutcheons. The Apothecary Box opens by the twin doors swinging outwards revealing initially the central compartments fitted with a single drawer and five glass bottles, each individually labelled. The two doors extend again to open double sized compartments each partitioned to hold a total of twenty four bottles, twelve to each side and six to each door fold. The glass jars vary from slimline size to a larger central bottle in each compartment. The pull out drawer contains a glass pestle and motor and scales with various weights. The Mahogany Double Opening Apothecary Box is engraved to the handle Percy Wardle M.B. (Bachelor of Medicine) and dates to the middle of the 19th century during the William IV Georgian period circa 1830.

The Apothecary box is complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.

Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role.

Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
