Gilt Brass Handle

From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Mother of Pearl Basket. The Basket with a beautifully engraved gilt brass handle with pierced design and scroll work hinges. The scallop edged bowl is finished with hundreds of mother of pearl and abalone triangles with iridescent colours forming a pattern around the outside into the circular bowl with square shaped inlay mother of pearl. The underside of the bowl is lined in a mustard yellow velvet to protect the base. The Antique Mother of Pearl Basket dates to the late 19th century Victorian period circa 1880.

Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. It is the same material that natural pearls are made from and is desirable due to its strong and resilient makeup along with its beautiful iridescent shimmer.
