Novelty Table Lighter

From our Silver collection, we are delighted to offer this Novelty Silver Torpedo Table Lighter. The Table Lighter shaped in the form of the tail of a Torpedo missile with rear gear propellor and rudders. To the centre of the torpedo, a chained candle snuffer acts as a lid to the top which when removed exposes the moisture wick for lighting. The top of the wick surround unscrews to access the wick and wadding for refilling as and when required. The Table Lighter is hallmarked Sterling Silver, London by Vander & Hedges (Tessiers Ltd After 1920) and is dated 1926 Art Deco Period. The base of the Table Lighter is stamped Tessiers Ltd London for the retail shop.

Vander & Hedges was established in 1875 after John Gotlieu Vander and John Hedges purchased the company from the Tessier family (originally descendants of Etienne de Tessier, a Huguenot refugee who arrived in England in 1712. They were located in New Bond Street London and were often referred to as E. Tessier and/or Vander & Hedges. The company retailed out of their Tessiers shop and in 1920 the firm became a limited liability company as Tessiers Ltd until it was sold out in 1992.

Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.

Sterling Silver refers to the alloy of metal containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc. Sterling Silver objects are stamped with the 925 mark to confirm their authenticity.
