Sterling Silver Mounted

From our Box collection, we are delighted to offer this stylish Art Deco Shagreen Cigar Box by Betjemann & Sons. The Box of rectangular shape covered to the exterior shall in Shagreen with Sterling Silver mounts and two artists boxing depictions ‘before and during’. The first scene features two boxers almost David vs Goliath with the second featuring the larger figure sweeping the other figure off his feet with a punch. The Silver mount is hallmarked George Betjemann & Sons Sterling Silver London and is dated 1929 along with ‘copyright of the artist’ stamped below the hallmarks. Opening the box reveals the Cedar lining perfect for storing cigars along with the inside of the lid which is another artists depiction of the third scene ‘after’ showing the larger figure seated with the smaller figure flat on his back. Each painting is signed HM Bateman to the lower right corner for Henry Mayo Bateman a British humorous artist and cartoonist. Further silver hallmarks can be seen on the edge of the box once opened, matching the outer hallmarks dating the box to the Art Deco period 1929.

The Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

HM Bateman (Henry Mayo Bateman 1887-1970) was a British humorous artist and cartoonist most noted for his “The Man Who…” series of cartoons which featured comically exaggerated reactions to minor and usually upper-class social gaffes, such as “The Man Who Lit His Cigar Before the Royal Toast”, “The Man Who Threw a Snowball at St. Moritz” and “The Boy Who Breathed on the Glass at the British Museum” which appeared in the satirical magazine Punch.

Shagreen is a natural hide typically from a Shark, Stingray or Dogfish. Shagreen saw a major boom during the Art Deco period where it was used as a covering for writing desks and well-dressed cabinetry.

Cedar wood has many variations. Cedar, also known as Lebanon Cedar, True Cedar can be found in Asia, Europe and North Africa. Cedar trees are long lived and often offer a poor quality, knotty wood. Logs used for veneer are carefully chosen to make sure they have a clean, straight grain. African Cedar, or Bosse, found in West Africa is a pink-brown colour when fresh, turning into a dark almost mahogany colour with age.Brazilian Cedar found in South America is a medium brown colour. Western Red Cedar is found in North America. A more durable cedar with a colour ranging from pink-brown to dark red.
