Simply magnificent regency writing box made by one of the most renown cabinet makers of the 19th century “David Edwards”. Typical of David Edwards workshop the choice of timber and veneers used were always the very best, in this case, no expense spared, beautiful kingwood and satinwood and tiny crossbanded tulipwood on either side of the brass inlay. The writing slope also has rebated double moulding design on its sturdy brass edging, campaign flush-fitting carry handles, vacant sun-shaped initial plate and brass barrel escutcheon which is marked: ” W. Muckleston “.

Opening the magnificent writing box reveals a replaced black leather writing surface with gold tooling. The surface is hinged in the middle so each half can be lifted. The lower half can only be accessed by using a clasp that is hidden in the lock plate, once this is slid with your thumb or finger the larger writing surface springs up revealing a large storage area and the underside of the slope has the David Edwards manufacturers label which reads: “D. Edwards manufacturer of writing & dressing cases to his majesty The Duke of York. No.21 King Street Bloomsbury Square Old Desks, Dressing Cases repaired. Inventor & Maker of the Patent Ink Stand.”

Lifting the top half of this David Edwards regency writing box reveals another large storage space, where a secret cover is hiding three small drawers.! Removing the pen-tray above the writing surface and then pressing the base of the right-hand divider will cause a false wall to spring forward. This can then be removed to access the three hidden drawers. Each drawer has been made expertly made with Cuban mahogany with tiny dovetailed joints and is veneered in Satinwood with a Rosewood crossbanding and turned wooden handles.

This regency writing box comes with a pair of silver-plated screw top inkwells and has a fully working lock and two tasselled keys. The key must be turned clockwise to unlock.
