Owl Car Mascot Circa 1931

From our Lalique collection, we are thrilled to offer this extremely rare Rene Lalique Hibou Car Mascot. The Hibou (Owl) car mascot is one of the rarest trophies in automotive history and considered the most elusive among the car mascots created by Rene Lalique. This piece proudly bears the acid-etched marks for ‘R. Lalique France. In 1931, precisely when the demand for such mascots was dwindling the factory reduced production making this particular mascot limited in number. This scarcity has elevated it to the status of the most sought-after car mascot ever created. The Hibou is sold with its original aftermarket brevette mount sold in the kesington store.

Literature Mark Goodger 25th Anniversary Catalogue page 78 and Félix Marcilhac book René Lalique maître-verrier #1181, Page 504.

René Lalique (1860-1945) created his stunning car mascot (bouchons de radiateur) designs between 1925 and 1931. Their production ceased in 1940, a year after WWII had begun. René’s factory, Verrerie d’Alsace, in Wingen-sur-Mode was forced to close following German occupation of the Alsace region. René sadly passed away in May 1945, so did not live to see the end of the war, nor the subsequent re-opening of the factory by his son Marc. Marc resumed production of his father’s famous mascot designs using the original steel moulds which had the fortune of being preserved, in spite of the war.
