More information about the Royal Horse Guards regiment.
The Royal Horse Guards (RHG) was a cavalry regiment of the British Army, founded in Newcastle upon Tyne by Sir Arthur Haselrig in 1650.
Due to the colour of the uniforms the regiment earned the nickname “The Oxford Blues”, which eventually became “The Blues”.
In 1877 the regiment became the Royal Horse Guards (RHG), which served in the French Revolutionary and Peninsular wars. In 1918 the regiment served as the 3rd Battalion, Guards Machine Gun Regiment and was also part of the Composite Regiment during the Second World War.
In 1969, The Royal Horse Guard was merged with the Royal Dragoons to form the Blues and Royals which is the second most senior regiment in the British Army.
