Solid Oak Tea Caddy in the Shape of a Sentry Box

From our tea caddy collection, we are absolutely delighted to offer this very rare solid oak tea caddy in the shape of a Sentry box. The caddy of oblong shape with a square base pedestal with a domed window featuring a hand-painted watercolour scene depicting a Grenadier Guardsman at ease with his rifle signed A.R. The lid of the tea caddy of triangular shape with a stepped roof hinged at the rear allows access to the tea storage within. The compartment features a floating solid oak lid with turned handle with traces of the original lining. Although unsigned we firmly attribute the tea caddy to the Army and Navy company.

Army & Navy C.S.L was established in 1871 as the Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd (Army & Navy C.S.L), the company started life as a large cooperative department store that supplied British military officers and their families during the 19th century. The society became a limited company in the 1930s and purchased multiple independent department stores during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1973, the Army and Navy Stores group was acquired by House of Fraser which itself was acquired by Icelandic investment company, Baugur Group, in late 2006, and then by Sports Direct in 2018.
