Sterling Silver Mounted

From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Silver Desk Inkwell Calendar Clock. The Inkwell of pyramid shape with rounded corners made from glass with silver mounts. The lid of the inkwell mounted with a Sterling Silver hinged lid hallmarked to the side John Grinsell & Sons, Birmingham and is dated 1905. Within the lid is a compartment to hold a pocket watch, when the inkwell is in use the lid flips up for time keeping and houses a nice sized pocket watch (complete with the piece). The pocket watch features a white enamel dial with black numerals and a subsidiary dial. The pocket watch can be removed for travel when required and put back for use upon a desk or stationary cabinet. The front of the inkwell features a full years calendar with the original 6 double sided cards featuring each month on in German from 1910, likely the piece was purchased from new and then taken back to Germany for use in 1910.

John Grinsell & Son originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. When the partnership was dissolved in 1871 John Grinsell started a new business with his four sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) known as John Grinsell & Sons. The company operated out of Victoria Works, 57 tower street St. George’s, Birmingham and they had showrooms in London and Glasgow. In 1905 the firm was changed to John Grinsell & Sons Ltd and was eventually purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd.

Sterling Silver refers to the alloy of metal containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc. Sterling Silver objects are stamped with the 925 mark to confirm their authenticity.
