Silver Hallmarks for 1937 Art Deco
From our Tantalus collection, we are delighted to offer this Art Deco Stamford Bridge Tantalus by Hukin & Heath. The Tantalus modelled with two decanters locked into place by a silver plate frame raised upon four linear feet. The frame with loop handle to the top which opens upon unlocking pivots backwards to release the decanter bottles. To the front of the Tantalus an engraving reads ‘presented by the Stamford Bridge Stadium Ltd.’ Giving it very good Chelsea football club provenance and we believe it was likely presented as a gift to either a member of staff or player. Each glass bottle of square shape with sterling silver collars and faceted stoppers. The collars are hallmarked sterling, Birmingham by Hukin and Heath and dated to 1937 Art Deco period. The underside of the locking mechanism is stamped Hukin and Heath (H&H) with the model number 2762.
The Tantalus comes complete with working lock and tasseled key.

Stamford Bridge is a football stadium in Fulham, home of Premier League club Chelsea. Stamford Bridge has a capacity of 40,173 and is the ninth largest venue of the 2024–25 Premier League season and the eleventh largest football stadium in England. Stamford Bridge opened in 1877, the stadium was used by London Athletic Club until 1905, when new owner Gus Mears founded Chelsea Football Club to occupy the ground; Chelsea have played their home games there ever since. It has undergone major changes over the years, most recently in the 1990s when it was renovated into a modern, all-seater stadium.
Hukin and Heath were important Silversmiths and electroplaters of Birmingham (1855-1953). Established by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. They registered Birmingham marks in 1875 and London marks in 1879. The firm began working in conjunction with Dr. Christopher Dresser in 1877 and some of their most notable designs have Dresser influence.
Silver Plate refers to a method of applying a thin layer of silver to a base metal such as brass. Therefore it refers to an item which is not solid silver but plated to the outer coating.
Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.
