From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this Sterling Silver Tea Caddy. The Tea Caddy of oval canister form with a central band of floral repousse decoration with two central shields on the front and back. The base and top with a pie crust crimped design with further floral repousse work to the top and lid. The Tea Caddy hallmarked to the side Colen Hewer Cheshire, Birmingham, 1897 and stamped to the base with the retailer’s mark Hamilton & Co Calcutta. The Tea Caddy dates to the 19th century into the latter stages of the Victorian period.

Repousee is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.

Sterling Silver is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.

Colen Hewer Cheshire was a silversmith operating out of Northampton Street, Cheshire, they were first registered in 1867.

Hamilton & Co Calcutta Robert Hamilton (1772-1848) arrived in India and started work in Calcutta in 1808. Under the Licence of the East Indian Company, he opened a Jewellery and Silversmithing shop at 5 Tank Square. In 1811 the business moved to 7 Court House Street after investment from Henry and James Glazbrook who became partners. H & Co opened further branches in Bombay (1833-36 and from 1868), Delhi and Simla (1865 onwards) and finally came to its demise in 1973 after nearly 100 years of successful business.
