Antique Jewellery Boxveneered in beautifully figured Rosewood with sterling silver vacant initial plaque hallmarked Thomas Diller, London 1845.
The interior of this fine jewellery box has unmarked silver lock & hinges and is lined in a luxurious teal velvet and white silk paper. The main compartment of this rosewood jewellery box features a removable jewellery tray with seven compartments, two of which are specially fitted for rings, earrings or cufflinks. Removing this jewellery tray reveals a large cushioned compartment for storing more treasured items.
The underside of the lid has a ruched velvet backed “secret letter compartment” which can be accessed by pressing your thumb under the middle screw behind the lock keep, the compartment will spring forward revealing a leather letter compartment which is gold tooled and bears the makers details: Wells & Lambe Manufacturers To The Queen Cockspur Street.Also in the lid is a removable free standing rosewood vanity mirror with its original plate.
This luxurious jewellery box by Wells & Lambe with hallmarked silver plaque by Thomas Diller comes with a fully working lock and has a tasselled key.
Wells & Lambe was formed in 1815, by J.Wells and John Lambe. They were originally based at 44 New Bond Street, London with a second premises at 29 Cockspur Street, which appeared to have been their main base between 1817 and 1825. They were makers to the Duke of Northumberland and some of their later pieces show that they were also makers to Queen Victoria.
