This charming Antique Boulle Photo Frame is attributed to Asprey, London.

There is something truly special about the shape of this beautiful photo frame, which is comprised of finely fretted Tortoiseshell and Brass inlay, an exquisite technique known as Boulle, which was invented by the renowned cabinet maker Andre Charles Boulle, 1642-1732.

Embossed on the top edge of the frame is the monogram “IGH” which, may identify who the frame may have been specifically made for.

The back of the frame slides out of the bottom to allow a picture to be placed behind the glass.

London’s Asprey, Halstaff & Hannaford, and Vickery were well known for their manufacture and sale of this particular type of Boulle work. In some cases, the makers would inscribe their pieces either on the shell, on the brass, or on labels; looking closely at the shell, you may be able to make out these famous names, although their visibility may have diminished over time due to many years of cleaning and polishing.
