Description
Tunbridge WareStationery box veneered in rosewood with a print / photo view of Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight on the top, surrounded by floral borders and having tiny Vandyke patterns to the lid sides.
Carisbrooke Castle was built on the site of a Roman fort in the 12th Century and is the strongest castle on the Island. The Woodville Gate, or as it is often called the Entrance Gate, was added by Anthony woodville in 1377 and the keep was added during the reign of Henry I. Later, during the reign of Elizabeth I, the castle was surrounded by further fortifications in anticipation of the Spanish Armada.
Some of the main rooms of the interior domestic buildings were used as late as 1944 by the Governor of The Isle of Wight as his official residence.
The interior is lined with red paper and features several letter compartments.
This tunbridge stationery box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.
