Dome Topped Stationary Box

From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Victorian Hungarian Ash Stationery Box by Howell James & Co. The Stationary Box is veneered to the exterior in Hungarian Ash with a domed lid mounted with large brass strapping across the body of the box. At each end of the brass strapping to the front circular porcelain plaques feature blue enamelled cherubs. The top of the box has a brass scrollwork mount fitted with a matching porcelain plaque. When opened the box reveals a matching blue silk water paper lining with several partitions for documents, letters and writing implements. To the rear of the box, a retailer plaque reads Howell James & Co Regent Street London The Stationary Box dates to the late 19th century Victorian period circa 1880.

The Stationery Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Howell James & Company were jewellers and silversmiths based from Regent Street in London between 1819 and 1911. In 1876 they added galleries showing professional art pottery and the fashionable amateur china painting and immediately became the main London venue for this. They were known to stock manufactured items as retailers adding their names to many pieces created by students and designs of the South Kensington School. In 1884 the company became a limited company and their name changed to Howell & James Ltd.

Ash also known as White Ash, grows in Europe and North America. It is cream-yellow in colour with subtle grain patterns which can have a ripple effect. Ash Burr is rare to be clean and often shows marks from ingrown bark and knots. Often as Olive trees mature they can develop a darker yellow-brown colour.
