Description

This Georgian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy by William Vincent, dating to 1776, is of oval form with repoussé laurel swags suspended from floral rosettes around the exterior. The lid is surmounted by a modelled tea plant handle formed with leaves, buds and a flower.

Opening the tea caddy reveals the original foil lined interior.. The base is hallmarked for sterling silver, London, by William Vincent, with the date letter a for 1776.

The silver caddy comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.

Who is William Vincent?

William Vincent was a London silversmith active during the late eighteenth century, working from St Ann’s Lane, Wood Street, between the 1760s and early 1790s. Although his maker’s mark is absent from the surviving registers, it is regularly found on well made Georgian silver from the 1770s and 1780s.

His work is most often associated with domestic silver, particularly teapots and tea caddies. These pieces are recognised for their well balanced forms, restrained decoration and the high standard expected of London silver during the period.

Sterling silver refers to the alloy of metal containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc. Sterling Silver objects are stamped with the 925 mark to confirm their authenticity.
