Description

Regency Writing Box made of solid Cuban Mahogany veneered in Rosewood still retaining its original polished finish, its bound with brass & inlaid with decorative foliate brass inlay to the top & front. The regency slope has two campaign flush fitting carrying handles, it has a secret compartment with three superb dovetailed drawers with rosewood fronts and turned bone handles.

The interior of this Antique Rosewood Writing Box is veneered in rosewood with decorative brass reinforced corners, has a brass inlaid lid under which are two candle sconces that fit into the front edge of the writing box. The writing surface is veneered in angled cross banded rosewood which is inlaid with brass stringing and brass wheels at each corner, it has its original blue tooled leather writing surface which can be locked. On the back of the larger writing surface has replacement and some original green ribbon for holding calling cards or letters. Under this writing surface is a wooden book rest which locates in the top of the writing box and the box angle can be changed via the lectern which is on the right hand side of the boxes interior.

This antique writing box comes with a fully working locks and tasselled keys.

This writing box was made by D. Edwards of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury Square, London, famous makers of Writing & Dressing cases to the Royal Family and inventor of the patent military traveling cases. The detailed work on this writing box such as, the inlaid brass, inset decorative handles, the timbers used of the highest quality and its mechanism for the secret compartment is work we recognise and believe to be from Edwards workshop.

Edwards were purchased by Asprey in 1859 and had two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria, they were known makers of some of the best writing, vanity and dressing boxes to be sold
