Art Deco Shagreen cigarette box with ivory edging and round finger tab to aid opening. The shagreen is vibrant in colour with very little fading which tends to happen over time subject to light.

The Shagreen box interior is lined in cedar wood which helps keep tobacco fresh. Some staining to the interior.

Shagreen is leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a Stingray. This type of Shagreen was first made popular by Jean-Claude Galluchat (d1774) a master leatherworker in the Court of Louis XV in France. It became a fashion amongst the French aristocracy and later throughout Europe. Shagreen is derived from the French word "Chagrin".
