Ornate english red tortoiseshell boulle thermometer stand with beautiful symmetrical brass surrounding the ivory temperature gauge mounted with brass fixings.

The thermometer features a hinged foldable support free standing.

The “Boulle” name comes from the famous André-Charles Boulle who was made famous for veneering furniture with marquetry of tortoiseshell, brass and pewter. Although he did not invent the technique, Boulle mastered the art of this complex marquetry and lent his name to its common name: boulle work. Boulle also specialised in floral marquetry in both stained and naturally coloured woods. Many of his designs are illustrated in a book of engravings published around 1720.
