From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this impressive inlaid Antique Mahogany Tea Chest. The Tea Chest of rectangular shape beautifully veneered in several methods with Mahogany having Boxwood Edging, Tulipwood and Ebony Cross banding and Boxwood Stringing. Each side with a matching design featuring an octagonal flame Mahogany medallion to the centre with angled shapes of Harewood finishing the panel framed within alternating cross banding. The lid is surmounted by a unmarked Silver loop handle and finished with a brass key profile. When opened the Tea Chest reveals matching inlaid lids in excellent original condition with barber pole alternating stringing and Boxwood inlay mirroring the exterior. The Tea Caddies can be removed from the Chest individually and the lids removed to see the silver foil lined interiors. The Tea Chest dates to the Georgian era during the reign of George III circa 1785.

Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.

Harewood is a type of sycamore maple which has been stained and treated to take the natural cream colour to a rich brown.

Tulipwood is also known as Brazilian Tulipwood, Brazilian Pinkwood and Bahia Rosewood. It is found in South America, mainly Brazil. The colour is a warm yellow with streaks or brown-red grain.

Boxwood can be found in Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. It is a light cream that turns darker to brown when exposed to light. The trees are very small, which is suited to smaller projects like edging or inlay instead of veneers.

Ebony is often almost completely black with very little visible grain often with a subtle red/purple hue. This wood is very expensive due to the slow-growing trees which can often be gnarly affecting the yield of straight workable wood. Most ebonies are very dense making work with hand tools very difficult and can quickly clunt cutting tools. This density however offers an excellent finish on turned items.
