Harlequin Pop Up Secret Compartment
From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Coromandel and Satinwood lined Writing Box by Fisher. The Writing Box of rectangular form veneered in exotic Coromandel with brass edging and brass stringing to the front and lid. The top of the box features a brass initial plaque formed in a circle with a belt and a matching circular brass barrel escutcheon. The Writing Box is finished with flush mounted campaign style twin loop carry handles each side. When opened the writing box reveals a dark red leather writing slope with embossed borders and gold tooling. The box is faced in Coromandel with brass strengthening to every corner. The rear of the writing box houses two Crown top inkwells, a removable pen tray and two further storage compartments, one lidded. The writing slope contains two storage sections lined in Satinwood, one in the lower half which lifts via a central tab and the second in the top half opens via a matching tab. Both storage lids are embossed with the makers mark Fisher, 188 Strand. There is a secret compartment which can be accessed by removing the pin from underneath the lid of the left storage compartment. Once removed the user can depress the secret locking mechanism which is located in the lock plate on the right hand screw. When the screw is pushed down a spring loaded compartment pops up containing three drawers. The Writing slope dates to the first half of the 19th century during the Victorian period Circa 1845.
The Antique Coromandel Writing Box by Fisher comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.
Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high quality furniture.
Victorian, an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
