Satinwood & Mulberry Expandable Document Box by Halstaff & Hannaford.
The box of rectangular form finished in Satinwood with a Mulberry wood border surmounted with hand-cut faceted Steel stud work complimented by a matching handle and escutcheon. The document box features a red leather accordion-like concertina centre which expands or contacts depending on the volume of documents inside. The interior features a teal-watered silk lining for storing documents with a further foldable red-leather compartment for letters to the underside of the lid. The maker’s label for renowned London box makers Halstaff & Hannaford is also located on the underside of the lid. Dating to the late Georgian period Circa 1830 during the Regin of George IV.
The document case comes complete with key and working lock.
William Halstaff, of 68 Margeret Street, Cavendish Square, London started manufacturing dressing cases in 1825. In 1842, he went into business with Thomas Charles Hannaford. They worked from Regent Street, London. They became Halstaff & Hannaford, famously making Ladies’ Work Boxes, Writing Boxes, and Dressing Cases, all the way up until 1898.
Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high-quality furniture.
Mulberry is a golden brown wood that darkens to a red/brown with age. It is easily worked and is odourless and none toxic. It is most commonly used in furniture and turned items.
