Description
Description
The Shagreen Box by John Paul Cooper is an early twentieth century example dating to circa 1920 during the late Art Nouveau period. Of distinctive octagonal form with a tented lid, the box is veneered throughout in natural shagreen framed by silver plated mounts.
The exterior is richly detailed with rope twist borders and stylised flower head accents dividing each panel, raised upon matching ball feet. The geometric construction combined with organic decorative detailing reflects the transition between the flowing forms of Art Nouveau and the emerging restrained geometry associated with early twentieth century decorative arts. The lid is fitted with a circular catch opening mechanism to the front.
The interior is lined in mahogany with warm richly figured timber contrasting against the pale shagreen exterior. To the rear lock plate the box retains the stylised monogram signature for John Paul Cooper, one of the leading British Arts and Crafts metalworkers and designers of the early twentieth century known for combining silver work with exotic natural materials including shagreen.
The Shagreen Box dates to circa 1910 and survives in good condition displaying strong colour and surface texture throughout.

Who was John Paul Cooper?
John Paul Cooper (1869-1933) was one of the leading figures of the British Arts and Crafts movement working across silver, jewellery and decorative objects during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Based in Birmingham, Cooper became known for combining hand worked metal with unusual natural materials including shagreen, mother of pearl and semi precious stones. His work often blended Arts and Crafts principles with emerging Art Nouveau and early modernist influences.
What is Shagreen?
Shagreen is a natural hide, most commonly from shark, stingray, or dogfish, valued for its distinctive textured surface. It has been used in luxury decorative objects since the 18th century, particularly on boxes and small cases.
Its popularity saw a significant revival during the Art Deco period, where it was widely used to cover furniture, boxes, and accessories, appreciated for both its durability and unique appearance.
