Description
The box boasts a rectangular shape and is stunningly finished with a rich Coromandel veneer on its exterior, accompanied by a centrally mounted brass plaque and a shield-shaped escutcheon. Upon opening the box, a range of exquisitely crafted tools are revealed, including scissors, a penknife, a thimble, a silver 925 propelling pencil, and multiple-sized needles, all neatly arranged within a fitted green silk lining. It is noteworthy that the contents are all stamped J.Bagshaw & Sons Liverpool, with two packs of needles from W. Bartleet & Sons, along with hooks featuring carved Mother of Pearl handles to complete the set.
While the box remains unsigned, we firmly attribute it to Lund of London, given its exceptional craftsmanship and quality. Moreover, this necessaire box is accompanied by its original key and fully working lock, ensuring that the contents remain safe and secure. This remarkable Coromandel box is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of its makers and a valuable addition to any collection of antique boxes.
Thomas Lund established his business in London in 1804. Initially selling pens and quills the Lund firm became known for the high-quality manufacture of cutlery, writing boxes and other luxury items. William Lund the son of Thomas was also a cutler and dressing case maker, apprentice to William Anderson from who William acquired the premises on Fleet Street, London in 1835. Thomas and William initially ran their businesses independently, but after Thomas’s death in 1845, William took over the running of both, whilst also expanding his own premises in Fleet Street. When William Lund died in 1872, his son Charles continued the business under the name of William Lund & Son.
Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years.
