Book Matched Veneer

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this pair of Georgian Mahogany Tea Caddies. The Tea Caddies of oval shape veneered in book matched Flame Mahogany veneer with Boxwood Edging and Tulipwood Crossbanging around the lid. The base of the Tea Caddies have a strip of alternating Boxwood and Tulipwood finished with a teardrop bone escutcheon and an engraved Sheffield plated top loop handle, due to use and age has given the handle a warm bronze colour. When opened the Tea Caddies reveal an inlaid oval cartouche with a conch shell to the centre and are both faced in Boxwood. The interiors are finished with floating Mahogany lids surmounted with turned Bone handles. The Pair of Tea Caddies date to the Georgian era during the reign of George III circa 1780.

Both the Tea Caddies come complete with a working lock and key.

Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.

Tulipwood is also known as Brazilian Tulipwood, Brazilian Pinkwood and Bahia Rosewood. It is found in South America, mainly Brazil. The colour is a warm yellow with streaks or brown-red grain.

Boxwood can be found in Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. It is a light cream that turns darker to brown when exposed to light. The trees are very small, which is suited to smaller projects like edging or inlay instead of veneers.

George III was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 25 October 1760 until his death in 1820.

Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
