Signed Thomas and George Austin Manufactures Dublin
A Victorian coromandel jewellery box by Thomas and George Austin, manufacturers from Dublin, veneered in richly figured coromandel and finished with brass edging and double stringing framing the lid and front. The circular brass initial plaque remains vacant, matched by a circular barrel escutcheon.
The interior is fitted with a reversible mirror which lifts out to reveal a document compartment bearing the impressed retailer’s mark for Austin of Dublin. Below sits a removable tray lined in royal blue silk water paper with cushioned pads for rings and cufflinks alongside divided sections for smaller pieces of jewellery.
A concealed push button to the rear of the tray, signed Austin Dublin, releases a spring loaded drawer to the front. The drawer is topped with a gold tooled writing surface and opens to provide additional storage for jewellery and personal effects.
Thomas and George Austin were respected Dublin makers known for producing high quality dressing cases and fitted boxes during the nineteenth century. Surviving signed examples such as this demonstrate the mechanical ingenuity and practical design associated with better Victorian workshops.
Dating to the middle of the Victorian period, circa 1860, this is a well constructed example in one of the era’s most desirable cabinet woods.

George Austin
was a cabinet maker in Dublin starting in the early 1800s and the business traded throughout the 1800s. He specialised in campaign furniture with portable writing desks, dressing cases and decanter boxes. His son Thomas joined the business around the 1840s and was just as skilled as his father with both winning numerous awards from Dublin exhibitions and being commended for their work at The Great Exhibition in London.
