Antique tantalus sets are among the most distinctive forms of decanter presentation, developed in nineteenth century England to store and secure valuable spirits. Traditionally fitted with two or three decanters housed within a locking frame, the tantalus was designed to display fine liquor while restricting access without a key.

The form was perfected and patented during the late nineteenth century by George Betjemann & Sons, whose London workshops became renowned for producing high quality tantalus sets, decanter stands, boxes, and other practical luxury accessories. Original Betjemann examples are now highly sought after, particularly those that retain their original decanters, locks, and keys.

The name tantalus references the Greek myth of Tantalus, condemned to eternal temptation without satisfaction, a fitting comparison for spirits kept permanently on display but out of reach.

At Mark Goodger Antiques, our collection includes antique tantalus sets in a variety of woods alongside silver plated and brass examples, often paired with cut crystal decanters and fitted drinking accessories. Many examples retain their original decanters, locks, and keys, making complete sets particularly sought after by collectors today.
