From our Jewellery Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Victorian Calamander Jewellery Boxes by Charles Asprey of London.

The Jewellery Box of rectangular form veneered in exotic Calamander with brass edging, brass oval initial plaque and brass barrel escutcheon. When opened the jewellery box reveals a cushioned gunmetal grey velvet lining. To the inside of the lid, a drop down compartment is hidden with a catch for storing documents, letters or paperwork. The top tray has various partitions for jewellery, cufflinks and rings and can be pulled out via the brass tabs to each side. Below the removable tray, a larger storage can be accessed for larger sized Jewellery. The side of the box features a pull out tray which can be accessed by removing the locking pin to the inside of the box, the side tray contains a central partition and matching lining for storage of larger jewellery. To the rear of the box a brass plaque is engraved by the maker C. (Charles) Asprey Manufacture 166 Bond Street (London).

The Jewellery Box dates to the late 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1860.

Asprey

was established in 1781 by William Asprey, and was originally set up to be a silk printing business, but soon became a luxury emporium. Located in central London, Asprey advertised ‘articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.’ As the business grew the company acquired several manufacturing facilities and hired silversmiths, goldsmiths, jewellers and watchmakers including Ernest Betjeman. In 1859 Asprey bought Edwards, a Royal Warrant holder and award winning dressing case maker. In 1862 Asprey was granted its first Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria and the company enjoyed a long relationship with various members of the British Royal Family.

Calamander

is a variation of Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.

Victorian

is an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
