Extremely rare Harlequin Tea Chest
Georgian Tea Chest veneered in Tortoiseshell & Mother of Pearl diamonds known as a harlequin design. Has canted corners with Ivory edging and stringing. The Harlequin tea chest has a silver looped handle, a ornate escutcheon and a vacant initial plaque with an engraved border. Interior of this magnificent Harlequin tea chest has two removable tea caddies with with the same design as its exterior and unusually has sliding covers and still contains traces of its tin foil lining.
This is a truly rare tea chest with Harlequin design, it is featured in the Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies & Society 1700 – 1800 book by Antigone Clarke & Joseph O’Kelly. We have had to do minor restoration as it was missing its initial plate and broken escutcheon.
This is only the fourth genuine Harlequin Tea Caddy and Tea Chest we have seen and only the second we have had the pleasure of owning. These are that rare so please beware of the many fakes on the market today..!
