Description

This interesting tea caddy is embellished with chinoiserie Figures, architecture and subtle flowers. The sides have brass lion mask handles and the caddy stands on four brass ball feet.

Inside is two compartments, containing traces of their original tin lining, with floral patterned lids.

Japanned is the name given for European imitations of Asian lacquer work. It uses heat-dried layers of varnish that are polished to give a smooth, glossy finish.

Japanned boxes are most commonly finished with a black lacquer making this a special piece.
